Common Shaft Seals for Melt Gear Pumps
Melt gear pumps serve as core critical equipment in the polymerization and transportation processes of polymer materials such as resins, chemical fibers, and rubber. Typically operating continuously under demanding conditions of high temperature and pressure, they impose extremely stringent performance requirements on all components.

Among these, the sealing performance of the pump shaft directly determines the operational stability and safety of the melt gear pump. Any shaft seal leakage not only interrupts normal production processes and compromises product quality but also risks causing safety incidents such as fires or burns due to high-temperature melt leakage. Therefore, scientifically selecting the appropriate shaft seal type based on specific user operating conditions is a critical factor in ensuring efficient, safe, and long-term equipment operation.
Currently, six primary shaft seal configurations are commonly used in melt gear pumps:
1. Packing Seal: Features a simple structure, easy disassembly/assembly, outstanding cost-effectiveness, and broad adaptability. It remains a widely adopted foundational sealing solution in industrial production.
2. Magnetic Drive Seal: Operates smoothly and quietly with minimal wear on sealing components, resulting in low failure rates. Its service life significantly exceeds traditional seals, making it suitable for applications demanding high operational stability.

3. Lip Seal + Packing Combination Seal: Combines the flexible adaptability of lip seals with the reliable sealing of packing seals. Suitable for various moderately demanding conditions, balancing practicality and stability.
4. Single-Ended or Double-Ended Mechanical Seal: Offers excellent sealing performance and high precision, achieving minimal or even zero leakage. The preferred sealing solution for high-temperature and high-pressure applications.
5. Spiral Seal with External Cooling: Combines the dynamic sealing properties of a spiral seal with an external cooling system to mitigate high-temperature effects on sealing performance, suitable for high-temperature operating conditions.
6. Spiral Seal + External Cooling + Packing Combination: Features a multi-level protection design. Building upon the spiral seal and external cooling, it incorporates a secondary packing seal for enhanced adaptability and reliability, capable of handling more demanding and complex operating conditions.

In summary, the appropriate selection of shaft seal configurations requires comprehensive evaluation based on specific conditions such as medium characteristics (viscosity, corrosiveness, crystallization tendency), operating temperature, operating pressure, and on-site environmental factors. This ensures the long-term stable, safe, and efficient operation of melt gear pumps, safeguarding production processes.
