Hot-Melt Adhesive Delivery Pumps

As the name suggests, a hot-melt adhesive delivery pump is a gear pump specifically designed to deliver hot-melt adhesive in its high-temperature molten state. Its core function is to overcome the high viscosity and rapid curing characteristics of hot-melt adhesive at high temperatures, thereby ensuring stable, continuous, and precise delivery and supply of the adhesive. It serves as the “heart” and “metering device” of automated production lines for hot-melt adhesive coating, spraying, and potting.

I. Working Principle of Hot Melt Adhesive Delivery Pumps

As a type of positive displacement pump, the working principle of a hot melt adhesive delivery pump is based on the precise meshing of gears: when the drive gear and driven gear inside the pump housing rotate in the specified direction, a low-pressure zone is created in the suction chamber, drawing the hot melt adhesive into the gear teeth; as the gears continue to rotate, the hot melt adhesive is carried into the delivery chamber and pushed forward along the pump housing; When the gears mesh again, the hot melt adhesive in the tooth pockets is squeezed into the discharge zone and ultimately forced out through the outlet pipe.

To accommodate the high temperature and high viscosity of hot melt adhesives, the core components of hot melt adhesive transfer pumps are typically manufactured from highly wear-resistant, corrosion-resistant high-temperature alloy steel or powder metallurgy alloy steel. After undergoing multiple heat treatment processes, such as through-hardening and nitriding, the components achieve a hardness of 62–68 HRC, enabling stable operation within a working temperature range of 120°C–250°C. They also feature excellent sealing performance to prevent hot melt adhesive leakage or contamination.

II. Primary Functions of Hot-Melt Adhesive Pumps

Hot-melt adhesive pumps play a role throughout the entire hot-melt adhesive application process, with their core value lying in “stability” and “precision.” Specifically, their functions can be divided into three key areas:

Constant-Pressure, Stable Delivery: The hot melt adhesive delivery pump effectively receives material from upstream processes. Through the forced delivery characteristics of gear meshing, it eliminates pressure fluctuations and provides continuous, stable adhesive pressure to downstream application equipment, ensuring uniform and consistent adhesive output while preventing stringing, adhesive breaks, or uneven coating.

Precise Metering and Flow Control: As a positive-displacement pump, its output flow rate maintains a strict linear relationship with rotational speed. By adjusting the pump speed via a variable frequency drive, high-precision control of adhesive output can be achieved, effectively managing adhesive consumption and ensuring product quality stability—which is crucial for cost control and precision operations.

Improved Production Efficiency: A stable pressure supply allows production lines to operate at higher speeds while reducing downtime or scrap caused by adhesive supply issues, directly boosting overall production capacity.

Reduced System Load: By handling the primary pressure-building function, it reduces the backpressure requirements of upstream melt tanks or extruders, enabling smoother system operation and lower energy consumption.
